How WIP & UFOs Block Creative Output
A known fact.. Purchasing new fabric and patterns is fun. Future outfits and dreams all in a shopping bag to take home and enjoy! That's what is great about fabric and pattern shopping. It's better than Christmas and lightens the soul.
We get home and some of us record the length and width of the fabric, name of the fabric shop, the cost and launder the fabric..all ready to go. Some of us just hide it in a cupboard for "later"....hence the name "Stash" given to a person's Fabric Collection!
At other times we cut out the fabric and our chosen pattern and put all the pieces in a bag ready to sew up. That's it and that's where it stays until we need to make it.
The worst by far is the half-done W.I.P (Work in Progress) or UFOs (Unfinished Outfits)! This is the result of not meeting the deadline, fit issues or project just being too difficult for some reason! Life then steps in and before you know it ,it's three months later!! Only a hem to finish..it makes no difference what that last thing is! We are paralyzed. It seems easier to cut out something new, than finishing a nearly finished garment.
Everyone has gone through this in some way.
Guilt and uneasy feelings are the result of these unfinished Outfits and keep us from producing the outfits we hope to sew and wear someday. Imagine if we were to sew all that we had planned to sew! All that Fabric working for us and delivering a Wardrobe full of clothes that we love wearing!
It is possible to clear the blockage with small steps:
- Do look at the WIP & UFOs that you have
- Assess whether it is still worth making the garment
- Decide if you still like the fabric and the pattern (i.e. if you saw it in a store would you buy it?)
- Check to see if it is still the right size
Time is the most valuable resource we have. Make a decision to:
- Let these creative blockages go
- Sew them up..just start with one
- Give them to someone who will love them
- Feel the joy as you feel the weight of the world lift from your shoulders
- Sew your wardrobe
- Finish them
- Wear them
- Have fun!
