My Me-Made Work+Holiday Travel Wardrobe
I love Deadline Sewing! It’s exciting and helps me make the fabric and pattern decisions I need to make … FAST!
I do love to make new outfits for a trip. It adds to the excitement and helps me to sew my fabric collection. Now that’s a Win/Win.
Part of my planning strategy is checking the weather, the activities, having some backup outfits (just in case I don’t finish sewing everything) and using some Tried and True (TNT) patterns. This helps keep my stress levels down and keeps the fun in my “sewing race against the clock”

• 2 x Speaking events
• Teaching an all day Workshop
• Evening Gala Dinner
The Holiday details:
• 2 x flights
• 7 days
• Weather: Hot, Humid, Windy - Travelling Distance from Melbourne Victoria to Cairns in Far North Queensland is approx 2,300 Km / 1,300 Miles
• Day trips to Cairns, Palm Cove, Port Douglas & Trinity Beach, restaurants, coffee shops, museums, sightseeing, Catching up with friends, jazz club …
Just the outfit for climbing into an airline seat
This outfit was definitely comfortable and I was glad I had a long sleeve top! It was cool on the flights. Activewear was helpful when climbing over passengers … domestic flights are squeezy!
The charcoal pants were made out of a viscose ponte and the top was out of a cotton spandex. Both felt lovely to wear.
Both backup garments.
I love meeting new friends at Sewing Conventions
My Tunic was made out of polyester georgette crepe worn with Stylearc Margaret black viscose bengaline pants. I liked the geometric drama of the pink and black print but I will probably add a bit more ease if I make another Tunic top. Loved that adding Black Foldover elastic made this top a quick make.

These Stylearc “Margaret”raspberry viscose bengaline pants were one of my favourite last minute makes - 11.30pm the night before our morning flight and finished in 30 minutes!
My Top was a hack of my Wrap and Go jacket pattern and I love it.

This T-shirt pattern is a TNT - Tried and True pattern. I could definitely trust this pattern with my fabric souvenir from Jansens Fabrics &Tailoring Store - Ghent Belgium plus the addition of foldover elastic to finish the neckline and armholes. I added length and side splits to make use of all the fabric.
The Stylearc Margaret raspberry Bengaline pants worked well with this tunic too.

How lovely to meet Martha and Robert from Sure Fit Designs Australia
I just had to make this lined sequin jacket … I wanted to use it as a prop for one of my talks and wear it to the Gala dinner. I started sewing on this jacket 2 weeks before departure and this Project did take me a while to complete. I was so glad I started early and enjoyed wearing it too. I wore it with my Black bengaline Stylearc Margaret pants and my Ready to wear RTW back-up .. black singlet top.

I started these linen pants at 10.30pm the night before departure. I had all my garments pre-cut and my fit already worked out by comparing the patterns to my garment blocks, so it was only the sewing that needed to be done. I loved that the side pocket was easy to sew and the pants (with elastic waist) were finished within an hour. I think these pants will be a favorite this summer. I was happy both the raspberry pants and the blue pants worked with this top.

My Ramie Wrap and Go tunic was a backup garment worn with my blue linen elastic waist pants with handy side pockets. These fabrics were Lovely to wear.
I am a fan of this asymmetric look
I finally made this Gyo top by Merchant and Mills …Woo hoo! I can’t believe I’ve finally made it. However it didn’t feel as wonderful to wear. The jury is out on whether it will be a go-to top this Summer. The straps may just need a bit of adjustment too. I was happy that the blue linen pants worked with this top.

I’m Glad I kept this dress now
Black version of Stylearc Margaret pants worn with my woven silk dress version of Burda 8645 plus black Foldover elastic to finish the neckline. This dress has been sleeping in the back of my wardrobe for 7 years so I was glad to take it as a back-up! I loved wearing the black pants with this dress.

Double Stylearc Day! Happy to try Stylearc Selina top with my Stylearc Margaret pants raspberry version. Colour pop. I am looking forward to making this top in a print for summer.
Nothing like a quick turnaround to help with being on time for an event
A quick top and shoe change and we are off to a fundraiser dinner.

Well we’re off back to Melbourne … getting ready to get rugged up again
Time to fly home. I made this Stylearc Sunny top in a cotton spandex two way stretch. This is not a fabric that drapes well … so I took it in on both sides about 3 cm. I wasn’t sure it would feel comfortable but it worked out well. I have been wearing it a bit now that Spring has sprung.
I did have quite a few more outfits planned that I didn’t cut out. You can’t wear a pile of cut outs on a holiday!
The good news is I have some outfit plans that I’m excited to make for this Summer.
I can’t wait to get going with my sewing … the humming and hawing is already done!
